A look at Singaporean’s top 100 favorite sites

You may think you know technology and hence be able to predict what sites Singaporeans are visiting, but the truth is the more you know, the higher the chances that you will get the order wrong. A point to note is the this top 100 list is provided by Alexa and is by no means the perfect measurement though it is still widely used within the industry.

Shocker Number 1: Yahoo! is number 1 in ranking, beating Google which ranks at number 4. Techies may think that yahoo is an obsolete search engine but the truth is that most of the less technically inclined people within the country still prefers to use Yahoo! due to its “one-stop shop” concept.

Shocker Number 2: Friendster is ranked number 2 while Facebook is number 7. Who the hell uses Friendster anymore? Ha… Apparently it still holds its place as the number 1 social network in Singapore though Facebook is fast catching up.

Interesting Fact 1: Blogger is the number 1 blogging platform followed by Livejournal and then Wordpress. Wordpress here refers to the commercial version (wordpress.com) and does not include self-hosted wordpress blogs (from wordpress.org).

Interesting Fact 2: About 15 of the top 100 sites are video hosting sites with YouTube leading the pack with 5 of them being porn sites. I have been observing the rankings for quite some time now and there has been a gradual decline in the number of porn sites making the list. A very encouraging sign.

Notable Mention: The most visited local site is HardwareZone which hosts one of the most popular forums in Singapore.

Are the rankings similar to your web surfing patterns?

Interestingly enough, my top 10 surfed sites are not there. Well with the exception of Facebook

1. Yahoo - My pick is Google without a doubt.

2. Friendster - I am a facebook member, I have already terminated my account with them.

3. I don’t use Youtube, I prefer other video sharing websites like iTudou. And to top it all, I am not a blogger user, and I login to my self hosted wordpress blog.

Gosh, am I Singaporean or not?!

Does it include only Singaporeans? What with the % of people from the other countries, it maybe Singapore’s top 100 site and not Singaporean’s top 100.

*so tempted to reply to the comment above by Jeslyn, but shan’t*

Your “shockers” are hardly shocking and your arguments are very subjective. I don’t think I am “less technically inclined” but I use Yahoo instead of Google as my primary search engine because of various reasons. One - I actually enjoy reading Yahoo news whenever my browser loads my home page - Yahoo.com

Unless I can’t find what I’m searching for on Yahoo, I seldom use google.

=)

@Jaslyn: I believe how Alexa knows your country is by your IP address. So you are right that it doesn’t just include Singaporeans but everyone in Singapore. Anyone please correct me if I’m wrong.

@Priss: I agree that the argument is rather subjective as the sample size I polled is small and I did a poor job defining “technically inclined”. I actually refer them to be programmers or people within the industry. Thanks for the feedback!

Actually more interesting (although not shocking) is Youporn at # 25!

My top 10.

1. Google
2. Facebook
3. Financial Times
4. Newsnow
5. Youtube
6. Stage6
7. BBC
8. NYT
9. Straits Times
10. HWZ

There are many social networking services operated like http://www.orkut.com, http://www.myspace.com, http://www.facebook.com etc. Orkut.com is being operated by http://www.google.com. MySpace is an online community that lets you meet your friends’ friends. These are popular sites especially among youths. We can judge the popularity of these sites by seeing their ranking in http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Alexa. Orkut has been steadily rising on the Alexa charts but MySpace is still significantly bigger than Orkut.com.
